Kick Off Summer in Kerrville

School’s out, the sun is high, and the Hill Country is calling your name. Kerrville may be a small Hill Country town, but it punches well above its weight when it comes to summer fun for families. Whether you have toddlers hunting butterflies or tweens who need a little more “wow” factor, Kerrville has something to keep every kid smiling all summer long.

And this summer? There’s something extra special happening downtown. Read on for our roundup of can’t-miss kid-friendly adventures, capped off by the most exciting cultural event to hit Kerrville in years.

Riverside Nature Center

1. Explore the Riverside Nature Center

Just steps from the river, the Riverside Nature Center is a hidden gem that has delighted Kerrville families for decades. This little nature sanctuary is a hands-on paradise for curious kids, featuring native wildflower gardens, butterfly habitats, and natural exhibits showcasing the wildlife of the Texas Hill Country.

Nature Nights is a free, weekly evening program the nature center runs throughout the summer, designed for families and all ages to explore the natural world after dark. Events kick off at 6:00 pm and each session brings something different, from stargazing to nocturnal wildlife to the sounds and stories of a Hill Country summer night. It’s the kind of experience that sticks with kids long after the trip is over.

Located at 150 Francisco Lemos St., open Monday through Saturday 10 am to 6 pm.

2. Camp and Hike at Kerrville-Schreiner Park

For families ready to go a little wild, Kerrville-Schreiner State Park is just minutes from downtown and offers over 500 acres of classic Texas Hill Country terrain. More than 14 miles of hiking and biking trails wind through cedar and oak, with stunning views of the Hill Country landscape along the way.

The park also has a swimming area on the river, campsites for overnight stays, and fishing spots that kids absolutely love. Whether you’re planning a day trip or a full weekend camping adventure, this park is quintessential Hill Country summer.

3. Beat the Heat: Splash Pads & Water Fun

Carver Park Splash Pad

Carver Park’s splash pad is a summertime favorite for the littlest members of the family. It’s a zero-depth, no-worries kind of water play, perfect for toddlers and younger kids who just want to run through jets and get gloriously soaked. Pack a towel, slather on the sunscreen, and let them go wild. Admission is free, making it one of the best deals in town on a scorching Hill Country afternoon.

Tip: There’s not a lot of shade at the splash pad, so pack a pop-up tent or umbrella and a cooler with cold drinks and snacks to keep everyone comfortable on those hot Hill Country afternoons.

Kerrville Kroc Center Outdoor Water Park

For older kids ready to kick things up a notch, the Kerrville Kroc Center’s outdoor water park delivers. The Salvation Army’s Kroc Center is one of Kerrville’s most beloved community assets, and its water features are a go-to destination for families looking to cool off in a big way. Check the Kroc Center’s website for current hours, seasonal passes, and any special summer programming. A membership is well worth it for families planning to visit more than once.

Tip: The Kroc Center has a concession area on site, so you can make a full afternoon of it without hauling a heavy cooler.

4. Catch a Show & Support the Arts

Kerrville has a performing arts scene that would surprise a lot of first-time visitors, and summer is a great time to experience it. Playhouse 2000, the Hill Country’s award-winning community theater, has two unmissable productions on the calendar that are perfect for families.

Shakespeare in the Park: A Midsummer Night’s Dream

On June 5 and 6, Playhouse 2000 and the City of Kerrville team up for the 15th annual Shakespeare in the Park, presenting A Midsummer Night’s Dream under the open sky. It’s free, it’s outdoors, and Shakespeare’s most beloved comedy, full of fairies, mix-ups, and pure silliness, is genuinely a joy for kids who have never seen live theater before. Pack a blanket and a picnic and make a night of it.

Tip: Shakespeare in the Park is BYOB (blanket and beverage). Arrive 30 minutes early to snag a good spot on the lawn.

P2K Youth Theater: Frozen Jr.

If your kids have seen Frozen approximately one thousand times, they are going to lose their minds over this one. The P2K Youth Theater’s Summer Musical Theater Camp brings Disney’s Frozen Jr. to the Cailloux Theater stage on June 26, 27, and 28, performed entirely by local youth ages 8 to 18. Friday and Saturday shows start at 7:30 pm, with a Sunday matinee at 2:30 pm. There is something genuinely special about watching kids perform for their community, and this one is a full-production musical worth planning your trip around. Get tickets at CaillouxPerformingArts.com.

Tip: Frozen Jr. is performed by kids for kids, so even squirmy little ones tend to stay locked in from start to finish.

5. Get Creative at the Kerr Arts & Cultural Center

The Kerr Arts & Cultural Center (KACC) is a cornerstone of Kerrville’s creative community, and it’s wonderfully welcoming to families. Rotating exhibits celebrate the work of regional artists, and kids often find something that sparks their imagination. Check the KACC calendar for summer workshops and youth programming.

And speaking of KACC: this summer, it’s hosting something truly extraordinary. Keep reading.

Spark! Places of Innovation

This is the big one, Kerrville families. This summer, the Smithsonian Institution (yes, that Smithsonian) is bringing its traveling exhibition Spark! Places of Innovation to our very own Kerr Arts & Cultural Center, and it’s an absolute must for families with kids of all ages.

Spark! explores how communities become hotbeds of creativity and invention: the people, the places, and the shared spirit that ignite big ideas. The exhibition features compelling stories of innovation rooted in everyday places across America, and it’s designed to spark conversation and curiosity in visitors young and old.

Why it’s perfect for kids:

  • The exhibition is interactive and visually engaging, not a “look but don’t touch” experience.
  • It sparks real conversations: Where do good ideas come from? What makes a community special? (Spoiler: Kerrville has a pretty good answer.)
  • It connects big, national stories to local ones, including the history of innovation right here in the Texas Hill Country.
  • It’s free to visit, making it one of the best deals in town this summer.
  • The KACC is a beautiful, welcoming space that makes even reluctant museum-goers feel at home.

The Spark! exhibit runs May 16 through June 28, 2026, giving you the whole start of summer to experience it. We recommend pairing your visit with a walk through the downtown Historical Walking Tour, so kids can see firsthand how innovation has shaped Kerrville for generations.
